I have an array of _ids and I want to get all docs accordingly, what's the best way to do it ?

The array might contain hundreds of _ids.

The find function in mongoose is a full query to mongoDB. This means you can use the handy mongoDB $in clause, which works just like the SQL version of the same.

model.find({
    '_id': { $in: [
        mongoose.Types.ObjectId('4ed3ede8844f0f351100000c'),
        mongoose.Types.ObjectId('4ed3f117a844e0471100000d'), 
        mongoose.Types.ObjectId('4ed3f18132f50c491100000e')
    ]}
}, function(err, docs){
     console.log(docs);
});

This method will work well even for arrays containing tens of thousands of ids. (See Efficiently determine the owner of a record)

The "good node.js /event driven" way of doing this is to not wait.

Like almost everything else when working with event driven systems like node, your function should accept a callback parameter that will be invoked when then computation is complete. The caller should not wait for the value to be "returned" in the normal sense, but rather send the routine that will handle the resulting value:

function(query, callback) {
  myApi.exec('SomeCommand', function(response) {
    // other stuff here...
    // bla bla..
    callback(response); // this will "return" your value to the original caller
  });

So you dont use it like this:

var returnValue = myFunction(query);

But like this:

myFunction(query, function(returnValue) {
  // use the return value here instead of like a regular (non-evented) return value
});

Javascript – How to update/upsert a document in Mongoose

Mongoose now supports this natively with findOneAndUpdate (calls MongoDB findAndModify).

The upsert = true option creates the object if it doesn't exist. defaults to false.

var query = {'username': req.user.username};
req.newData.username = req.user.username;

MyModel.findOneAndUpdate(query, req.newData, {upsert: true}, function(err, doc) {
    if (err) return res.send(500, {error: err});
    return res.send('Succesfully saved.');
});

In older versions Mongoose does not support these hooks with this method:

defaults
setters
validators
middleware
