R – Windows Media Center Application and UAC

I'm currently trying to write a Windows Media Center Application (Vista) that can restart a service with UAC enabled. Everything works fine when UAC is disabled but as soon as UAC is enabled I get an Access is Denied error.

I believe this is because the Window Media Center applications are running under the Windows Media Center process and as such would need to be started as Administrator for this to work. Does anyone know how I might achieve this with UAC enabled?

Interesting problem... I wouldn't expect a difference bewteen the UAC/non-UAC scenario unless the launched program required administrator privilege (and I doubt that either notepad or calc does). Anyway, have you tried setting the thread's desktop before calling CreateProcess()?

HDESK hOld = GetThreadDesktop( GetCurrentThreadId() );
HDESK hNew = OpenDesktop( "name", 0, FALSE, GENERIC_ALL );
SetThreadDesktop( hNew );
CreateProcess( ... );
SetThreadDesktop( hOld );

Per-user application specific data should be written in the AppData folder.

You should use SHGetKnownFolderPath with FOLDERID_LocalAppData.

In managed code, you should use System.Environment.GetFolderPath with System.Environment.SpecialFolder.LocalApplicationData.
