Registering Zend Database Adapter in Registry

I am looking to register a reference to the main Database Adapter in the Registry during Bootstrapping so it can be used elsewhere in my site (specifically the Authorisation action).

I have implemented an ugly fix where i create a Database Table object and call the getAdapter() method on it and pass through that. However, this is a bad way of doing it and I would like it to be available via the registry.

Does anyone know how to do this? Any help or pointers in the right direction are appreciated!

If you're using Zend Framework 1.8+, and created your project with the command line tool, then it's as simple as registering your database settings in your application.ini config file.

resources.db.adapter = "PDO_MYSQL"
resources.db.params.host = "your.database.host"
resources.db.params.dbname = "database_name"
resources.db.params.username = "username"
resources.db.params.password = "password"
resources.db.isDefaultTableAdapter = true

If your database settings are preceded by resources.db you won't even need to do anything in your Bootstrap.php file because it will do it for you. Also, by setting the isDefaultTableAdapter setting to true, you can get an instance of your database adapter anywhere in your application.

$dbAdapter = Zend_Db_Table::getDefaultAdapter();
$authAdapter = new Zend_Auth_Adapter_DbTable($dbAdapter);

You need to create a Zend_Db_Adapter, which is the class you use to connect to the database.

$db = new Zend_Db_Adapter_Pdo_Mysql(array(
    'host'     => '127.0.0.1',
    'username' => 'webuser',
    'password' => 'xxxxxxxx',
    'dbname'   => 'test'
));

Or you can use the factory() method to make instantiation more configurable:

$db = Zend_Db::factory('Pdo_Mysql', array(
    'host'     => '127.0.0.1',
    'username' => 'webuser',
    'password' => 'xxxxxxxx',
    'dbname'   => 'test'
));

Then specify this adapter object to your table class. There are at least three ways to do this:

Set an application-wide default for all tables:

Zend_Db_Table_Abstract::setDefaultAdapter($db);

Specify the adapter to the table constructor:
```
$table = new MyTable( array('db'=>$db) );
```

Store the adapter in the registry and specify it to the table or set it as default:

Zend_Registry::set('my_db', $db); 
$table = new MyTable( array('db'=>'my_db') );
// alternatively:
Zend_Db_Table_Abstract::setDefaultAdapter('my_db');

Surely if the entry is a new one you wont have an ID being passed from your form?

Can't you do a quick check if that is null or empty then call an insert rather than the update?

Don't try and do too many things with one method, if they do a different task seperate them out.

Heres an example of my insert / update methods situated in a class which extends Zend_Db_Table (Zend Framework 1.8)

public function insertQuote($quote)
    {
        $data = array('id'=>null,'quote'=>$quote, 'dateCreated'=>NOW());
        $id = $this->insert($data);

        return $id;
    }

public function updateQuote($id, $quote)
    {
        $data = array(
        'quote'=>$quote
        );
        $this->update($data, 'id = ' . (int)$id);
    }
