RSpec and devise : cannot sign_in admin

I am migrating my standart Rails unit tests to RSpec and i have problems with devise. All controller containing devise authentication are failing with RSpec.

I try to sign_in an admin in RSpec following the devise tutorial, without success :

Here is what i tried :

/spec/controllers/ipad_tech_infos_controller_spec.rb

before :each do
    @request.env["devise.mapping"] = Devise.mappings[:admin]
    @admin = FactoryGirl.create :admin
    sign_in @admin
end

/spec/support/devise.rb

RSpec.configure do |config|
  config.include Devise::TestHelpers, :type => :controller
end

/spec/factories/admin.rb

FactoryGirl.define do
  factory :admin do
    email "abc@abc.com"
    password "foobar"
    password_confirmation {|u| u.password}
  end
end

My model is not confirmable, all my controller spec are failing.

If i remove before_filter :authenticate_admin! then all my tests pass.

Can anybody help ?

Likely culprit: Make sure you're not setting the session explicitly in your controller specs.

For instance, if you're using the default Rspec scaffold generator, the generated controller specs pass along session parameters.

get :index, {}, valid_session

These are overwriting the session variables that Devise's helpers set to sign in with Warden. The simplest solution is to remove them:

get :index, {}

Alternatively, you could set the Warden session information in them manually, instead of using Devise's helpers.

@pschuegr's own answer got me across the line. For completeness, this is what I did that gets me easily set up for both request specs and controller specs (using FactoryGirl for creating the user instance):

in /spec/support/sign_in_support.rb:

#module for helping controller specs

    sign_in @user # method from devise:TestHelpers
  end
end

# module for helping request specs
module ValidUserRequestHelper

  # for use in request specs
  def sign_in_as_a_valid_user
    @user ||= FactoryGirl.create :user
    post_via_redirect user_session_path, 'user[email]' => @user.email, 'user[password]' => @user.password
  end
end

RSpec.configure do |config|
  config.include ValidUserHelper, :type => :controller
  config.include ValidUserRequestHelper, :type => :request
end

Then in request spec:

describe "GET /things" do
  it "test access to things, works with a signed in user" do
    sign_in_as_a_valid_user
    get things_path
    response.status.should be(200)
  end
end

describe "GET /things" do
  it "test access to things, does not work without a signed in user" do
    get things_path
    response.status.should be(302) # redirect to sign in page
  end
end

and similarly, use 'signed_in_as_valid_user' in controller specs (which wraps Devise::TestHelpers sign_in method with a user from FactoryGirl)

I ran into the same problem when following the how-to you mention. The solution is to remove calls to valid_session from each of the requests, since it overrides the session values set by the sign_in helper.

It's actually documented in a code-block in the very same how-to, I missed it too :(
