Sql – MSDB database is in recovery_pending state and I don`t have backup of msdb?

My SQL Server 2008 Developer edition has got Microsoft SQL Server Error 945 error and it is in Recovery_Pending state . It is asking for the log file to be restore or recover but I don`t have backup of of the msdb database . What should I do now . I am not able to view the list of my databases in object explorer and also sql agent service is not visible.

Please help me out.

I had this situation restoring a database to an SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition instance using Symantec Backup Exec 11d. After the restore job completed the database remained in a "Restoring" state. I had no disk space issues-- the database simply didn't come out of the "Restoring" state.

I ran the following query against the SQL Server instance and found that the database immediately became usable:

RESTORE DATABASE <database name> WITH RECOVERY

I too came across this issue.

Solution :

Don't create an empty database and restore the .bak file on to it.
Use 'Restore Database' option accessible by right clicking the "Databases" branch of the SQL Server Management Studio and provide the database name while providing the source to restore.
Also change the file names at "Files" if the other database still exists. Otherwise you get "The file '...' cannot be overwritten. It is being used by database 'yourFirstDb'".
