Hi, I have encountered the above mentioned error while doing an SSRS project. And from the research, it seems like it is SQL server related issue.

I am trying to access a remote SQL server….so I was wondering how can I get rid of that error?

Do I have to install SQL server Standard edition on my local machine or the server that I am trying to access should be installed with Sql Standard edition?

I have got Express editions installed on both my local machine and the server…

From Books Online:

Report data sources must be SQL Server relational databases that run locally in SQL Server Express.

Features Supported by Reporting Services in SQL Server Express.

With SQL Server Express you can only use a Data Source where the database engine is from the same instance running SSRS.

If you need to connect to other instances your only options are to get a backup restored to your local instance or to install a SQL Server edition that allows remote Data Sources; most likely Developer for your own needs or Standard or above for any production instances.

It depends on what's allowed under your specific licencing agreement.

This is, honestly, a guess as I don't have SQL 2008 Express to test this on - but it definitely works on SQL 2005 standard.

I think you can configure the property using rs.exe

Create a text file (I'm assuming you'll call it myReportsEnable.rss) and add the following text to it:

    SetSystemProperties
End Sub

Private Sub SetSystemProperties()

    Dim Properties(0) As Microsoft.SqlServer.ReportingServices2008.[Property]
    Properties(0) = New Microsoft.SqlServer.ReportingServices2008.[Property]

    RS.SetSystemProperties(Properties)

(I'm getting this from SQL2005, so I'm assuming that Microsoft.SqlServer.ReportingServices2008 is the right type to use - apologies if it's not)

Save the file, then execute it from a command line using rs.exe:

rs -i myReportsEnable.rss -s http://~YourServerName~/reportserver

Sql-server – “Enable remote error” in SSRS

Follow below procedure to enable remote error in SSRS

1) Open SQL Server Management studio and log in with reporting services as the service type.

2) right click on the instance and go to properties so here attach an image as the popup is shown after goto Advanced tab here you can find EnableRemoteError in Security tree.

After enabling remote error you can figure out actual error thrown by the database.
