The subreport repeats itself in Detail band

I am new to JasperReports, basically I want to put a subreport in a mainreport

The problem is that I put the sub report in the Detail band, so when I query a database that has multiple data the subreport will always repeat itself multiple times when I output the report to a pdf. I want a report that does not repeat itself regardless of how many data I have in the database that i connect with

I have searched the Internet and the solutions is to add

new Boolean($V{REPORT_COUNT}.intValue()==1)

in the print when expression attribute of the subreport, that does solve a part of my problem due to the fact that now my subreport only prints once but it still leaves some blank pages after my subreport is displayed

So I assume it is still repeating itself but just doesn't print the data because of the expression that I added , people say that the nature of the detail band is supposed to work that way and that I shouldn't put the subreport in the detail band, but if I put it in some other band I get this error:

Error filling print... Subreport overflowed on a band that does not support overflow.

The error above will happen if I have a lot of data to the extent that it may take up more than a page.

How do remove those blank pages? If I am ask to not put it in a detail band then what should I do? or what solution are there?

The Detail band will be generated as many times as the number of records you have in your main dataSet(populated by the top-level query).

If you want to keep the subreport in the Detail band, which is normal by the way, you can do one of these things:

either have a dummy query that returns only one record, so that the Detail band generates only once. Then, pass the report connection to your subreport. You may have done that already. This way you can run your query independently of the main report.
or leave the report as-is and add your printWhen expression ($V{REPORT_COUNT}.intValue()==1) directly on the Detail band, not on the subreport. Please note that this is just an ugly hack that may affect the report performance. Your main query still returns a lot of data that you don't use so you should consider the other options.

If you can move the subreport out of the Detail band, place it in a band that allows overflow like Title or Summary band. Then:

have your main dataSet's query empty so that no Detail band gets generated
set whenNoDataType="AllSectionsNoDetail" at the report level(in the <jasperReport> tag) so that all the other sections except the Detail get generated
exactly as in the first option above, pass the report connection to your subreport and work from there

I fixed the problem, so I thought I'd post my solution here in case someone found it useful.

Things to check:

If you're in a Detail band, check your report's Print Order. It has to be Vertical. Horizontal Print Order reports are not allowed to overflow on Detail bands.
Check your subreport's dimensions. The subreport's width must be smaller than the report's width, and, for non-growing bands (see point #3 below), the height must be smaller than the band's height.
Some bands grow, some bands don't. Keep this in mind with your subreports. If you have a subreport in a header or footer, make sure they do not grow, meaning that your datasource to that subreport can't send in too many elements, or send in repeating elements where your subreport is expecting one or few elements.

In my case, I had made a subreport and passed it a datasource that I wasn't actually using (it was an informational subreport not using any data from the datasource).

(the example is an XML datasource but the same concept applies to SQL datasources.)

e.g.

(net.sf.jasperreports.engine.data.JRXmlDataSource)$P{REPORT_DATA_SOURCE}
    ).subDataSource("/Order/Note")

Later, the "Note" was turned into an array instead of a single note. Which meant my footer-subreport was trying to repeat twice, thus the footer report was printing twice, making it too high. Thus the error.

Java – Detail band of subreport not showing

I had the same problem for more than 1 day. In the application I am developing on there are multiple JasperReports which work. I encountered this problem when adding a new one. No matter what I tried, nothing displayed in the Detail band. I tried everything from triple-checking the Controller that populates the report, to upgrading to the latest jasperreports jar and latest iReports version. Nothing seemed to work.

The problem is that the report is set by default to: When No Data: All Sections, No Detail, which basically means that if no data is sent to the report, it will display all sections, except for the Detail one.

Although besides static text which I was using to test the report I was passing parameters directly from the Java Controller, it did not work until I added an EXEC [myFunction] $P{parameterId} to the Query Text property of the report. The function is a simple straightforward one, which takes a parameterId passed from Java as a parameter and returns something. (also, make sure you set the The language for the dataset query sql property to SQL).

To sum up, for some reason the report doesn't seem to take the Java parameters as data (so it displays all the sections, except for Detail), so when I explicitly call a SQL function which returns some parameters and put them into my detail page, it works.

I hope this helps you, I busted my head for 10 hours to figure this out.
