VBScript WScript.Shell Run() – The system cannot find the file specified

I'm trying to write a VBScript (.vbs) script that uses the WScript.Shell Run() method, but it seems as though Run() can't find the file I'm passing in.

I've boiled my script down to the following code that will reproduce the results. This can be copied to a text editor, saved as test.vbs and ran. The type command simply outputs the text inside the file passed in.

Dim WShell
Set WShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

WShell.Run("type C:\inetpub\wwwroot\iisstart.htm")

Set WShell = Nothing

If you were to run the code in Run() directly from the CMD prompt, it works fine. But when it's run from inside a .vbs script and using Run(), it gives me the following error:

Test.vbs(4, 1) (null): The system cannot find the file specified.

I can run other commands using Run() just fine, but when I try to pass in a path it fails. Exec() fails with the same error by the way. Any ideas?

Set oShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

strCmd = "cmd /K type C:\inetpub\wwwroot\iisstart.htm"

oShell.Run(strCmd)

Set oShell = Nothing

I haven't tried myself, but according to MSDN, to view a transform file (MST) you need to open your MSI database and then use the ApplyTransform method with the msiTransformErrorViewTransform parameter. This will give you a temporary _TransformView table, which you can query to get the desired information.

So, your code should look like this:

You can use WScript.Arguments to access the arguments passed to your script.

Calling the script:

cscript.exe test.vbs "C:\temp\"

Inside your script:

Set File = FSO.OpenTextFile(WScript.Arguments(0) &"\test.txt", 2, True)

Don't forget to check if there actually has been an argument passed to your script. You can do so by checking the Count property:

if WScript.Arguments.Count = 0 then
    WScript.Echo "Missing parameters"
end if

If your script is over after you close the file then there is no need to set the variables to Nothing. The resources will be cleaned up automatically when the cscript.exe process terminates. Setting a variable to Nothing usually is only necessary if you explicitly want to free resources during the execution of your script. In that case, you would set variables which contain a reference to a COM object to Nothing, which would release the COM object before your script terminates.
