When the LinkedIn mobile client was just released I've heard complaints that during/after installation it was combining LinkedIn contacts with the main contact list, creating a mess. So I decided to stick with the desktop version only.
Is it still the case?
There is an option to choose the older version when you scroll to the bottom of the page. Select that option and you will be directed to use the older version of Gmail.
I believe this goes away if you are a premium user. Free users agree to the Terms of Service that allows them to do trickery like this. It is annoying, but remember that you are using a free service and you have to deal with annoyances like this.

Before synchronizing your phone contacts LinkedIn take your permission. It do not do it automatically.
And yes it still do the same with owner permission.
