Google has started to warn me that I am almost out of space in my Gmail account. How can I sort my messages by size to identify any expendable large emails in my account?

The new operators are:
size:— Search for messages larger than the specified size in bytes- Example:
size:1000000 - Meaning: All messages larger than 1MB (1,000,000 bytes) in size.

larger:andsmaller:— Similar tosize:but allows abbreviations for numbers- Example:
larger:10M - Meaning: All messages of at least 10M bytes (10,000,000 bytes) in size.

You can now search for emails of that size and delete any to free up space.
You probably do not have any mail older then 2006. Gmail will display all mail irregardless of its overall age. After checking my own account which was created in November of 2004 (only 7 months after Gmail first came out). I can see all mail going back to the original welcome email. See the screenshot below as evidence.

This is not possible at the moment. If you look at the list of search operators, you'll see that the closest thing you can do is filter out all emails with an attachment.
An alternative would be to use an IMAP client (such as Thunderbird) and then use that interface.
Since you want that feature, express your needs over at the feature-suggestion site of Gmail.
