Is there way to switch on syntax highlighting in Google Docs?
Personally I use it for editing and collaborating on C++ files, but PHP or SQL syntax highlighting also would be interesting.

It's a big problem with Google docs. The new version that the Google Apps team released last week is better with formatting, but for printing purposes, I usually just export to a Word doc and work from that.

Automatic corrections for → and ← are included as defaults. You just need to add your own for ↑ and ↓. (Maybe |^ and |v?)
While editing a document,
- Select Preferences from the Tools drop-down menu.
- Either deselect the checkbox next to the word for which you'd like to disable text substitution, or press the "x" to the right of the word to delete the row.

With the new Add-Ons for Google Drive, you can get code highlighting with the Code Blocks add-on.
After installing the add-on, you can access it by selecting the code you want to format, go to _Add-ons → Code Blocks → Start:
This pops up a sidebar where you can select the programming language and a theme:
