I used to be able to see my friends' birthdays on one of the side panels on the Facebook homepage, but now it's gone and I can't find a setting to bring it back. Is there such a setting? And if yes, where can I find it? And I know there are birthdays because it shows in my timeline from other people posting.

By "homepage" I guess you mean timeline.
If that is the case then you need to:
- Log in to Facebook
- Select the drop down menu from the arrow and select
Privacy Settings(Fig. 1) - Click the
Customcog wheel (Fig. 2) - In the section called
Timeline and Taggingclickedit settings - In the popup click the drop down next to
Who can post on your timeline?and selectNo one(Fig. 3) - Click

It is very simple. Just see this screenshot:
You have to first click on the "Friends" button, then you see a pop-up drop down list, at the end of which you have the option of "Unfriend".
PS: Kindly note that, based on your mobile model, the mobile browser/facebook app you are using, the kind of script that runs when clicking on "Friends" here may not be supported, in which case you will not be able to "Unfriend" anyone.
