It looks like ping.fm is the best bet or some 3rd party app. Otherwise you are basically SOL.
To get a direct link to a Status Update or a Tweet you click the time of the Status Update or Tweet was posted.
This opens the Status Update or Tweet on its own. You can then use this URL as a direct link that particular Status Update or Tweet.

According to this article, 420 characters, but I can't test it for the moment, since I don't have access to Facebook from my current network.I have just tested it and the latest iteration (late August 2011) allows for Status updates of up to 500 characters.
UPDATE (10/11/2011):
Facebook increased the status updates character number to 5.000. See screenshot below.

Facebook just increased the status updates character limit to 60.000.
