I turned off conversation mode.
I set up a filter that applies the label Family to any email coming from a family member's email address.
I set up a separate mailbox inside Gmail for any emails with the label Family.
Is there a way to set up the search filter to not show me the ones I have archived? I have tried the following:
label:Family AND -in:inbox
label:Family AND NOT in:inbox
Any suggestions?
I actually just figured out a workaround using a different filter. With credit to this post, the way to do it is to filter the text in the email header, which includes the me@business.com address it was originally addressed to.
So I created this filter in the "has the words" field:
deliveredto:me@business.com
And had that filter apply the Business label.

Move messages between tabs
If you see a message in your inbox that you want in a different tab, all you have to do is drag and drop it into the other tab. Another way to do this is to right-click a message while viewing your inbox.
After you move a message to a different tab, a message above your inbox will ask if you want to undo that action or choose to always put messages from that sender in the tab you chose.
If you drag and drop the message to the tab you want the message in, it should prompt you and confirm if Gmail should always move messages from that sender to the inbox category of your choice.
When I do this with a message, I receive the following prompt at the top of the screen:

You've got it a bit backwards there. "Archive" simply means to remove the "Inbox" label. So, if something is "unarchived", it means it's still in your Inbox.
Just a note:
ANDis superfluous, because the search is implicitly "AND". Also, "NOT" does not work.-is used for negation.
