Gmail – Stop Gmail from running all filters

Has anyone figured out how to get Gmail to stop processing filters once a condition is met? I would like to avoid having certain messages potentially get multiple labels. As great as Gmail is, the filtering option is quite primitive.

This sort of answers my question. You can't stop filters from processing once a condition is met, but you can add a filter to filter messages that have been filtered, which will do in my case.

Gmail filters apply to sent mail by default. They do, however, not apply to drafts.

So, Jacob's answer describes the default process for making filters and it will indeed also work for mails sent by yourself.

This answer assumes that all of the automated emails are sent from the same address.

I'm not sure how you've created your filter, but try filtering by the from: field only. If the automated sender's address is always something like no-reply@domain.com then set up your filter to filter on:

from: no-reply@domain.com

This will make sure all automated email will hit the filter. Then, when someone else replies to that address, the new sender's email will be different from the one listed in the filter, and allow it to hit the inbox as normal.
