I use a number of Gmail accounts for different purposes (eg. family, games-related, etc). All except one is listed as gmail.com but one is listed as googlemail.com.
Have tried removing and re-adding the account, specifically entering the account name with gmail.com. But after closing Chrome, when I come back to this page the account is again displayed as googlemail.com.
Why is this and can I change it? My preference would be gmail.com for all of them.
On the old version of contacts, in the list of contacts you can see what groups they're each in on the right hand side:
Contacts that are in no groups show an empty space.

You can unlink your old Google account from your YouTube account. In YouTube, under Account Settings->Manage Account, there should be an option "Unlink YouTube and Google Accounts." Once you unlink them, you should be able to link your new account with your YouTube account and multiple sign in will play nice.
YouTube accounts created after YouTube joined Google are considered part of your overall Google account. There is no real way of separating them (you couldn't separate your Gmail account from the rest of your account, per se). I have the option to unlink because I created my account before that, and Google sees my YouTube account as an account that just happens to be associated with a Google account.

To answer the question: @googlemail.com was created for Gmail users of a particular country (the United Kingdom, the Russian Federation, Poland and Germany) where "Gmail", as a trademark, was already taken by local folks, so Google was forced to use @googlemail.com instead.
Apart from this, there is also @google.com for Google employees.
