Google Calendar – Free Form Input for New Events

Is it possible to add a new Google Calendar event using a free form input? Dumping in a chunk of unstructured English and having the app attempt to extract date and time automatically, instead of entering data into form fields?

An example would be writing "Saturday, 28 December 2013, 11:55 PM" and having the correct date and time pop up in the date and time fields.

This really depends on what you mean by "unstructured". However, your example is reasonably structured and this works as intended using the Google Calendar gadget (enable the "Lab experiment") in gmail.

At the bottom of the calendar gadget there is an "Add" link that gives you a single text box in which to enter the details of your event. Then click the "Quick Add" button.

"Saturday, 28 December 2013, 11:55 PM"

This creates an event at the specified date/time that lasts 1 hour (by default). The duration of this event is taken from the "default meeting length" as set in your Google Calendar (from 15 to 120 minutes).

On the left side under the title my calendars there is a link that says configuration, click that one first. Then you enter a page with several tabs, but by default you enter in your desired tab which is calendar. In this tabs you will find a link called notifications, click that link. In that page you can set all the reminders of the events that you want for before the date of the apointment, and you can program as many reminders as you want, in your own desired times.

Then you wont have to configure each appointment reminders, there will all work with your default configuration.

I have had limited success with the following format:

Subject: My test event

Email body says:

This is my test event!

When: May 7, 9-10AM
Where: 123 Main Street, Berkeley, CA

Using the keyword "Location" instead of "Where" seems to work also.

In Google Calendar, this will populate the Subject, the body and the event time and the event location (The field labeled "Where").

I have been using the above format with my personal Gmail account, and my institution's Google Apps account. It usually works with the "Add to Calendar" button, and with the "More: Create event" menu option.
