I am working on a school project and I need one page in portrait and the rest in the landscape. I would rather not have multiple documents though. Any suggestions?

In short, yes!
Assuming you have a second language installed on your machine, you should simply be able to toggle to it normally. According to my experience Google Docs will automatically support it if your OS does. You can toggle back and forth at will (usually Cmd+Space on Mac, Alt+Shift on Windows, and user-defined on Linux) as you would in any other document.
As noted by Felipe Alvarez, this is no longer available as an option. Therefore, while this answer was correct two years ago when the product was Google Docs, it no longer applies to the current Google Drive app.
Assuming you mean opening documents from your list, that's in the Google Docs settings on the "General" tab.

Unfortunately, this is not possible. You can either have Portrait mode or Landscape mode. Combination of both modes in one document is unlikely. (you may try to create such desired document in desktop MS Office Word 2016+ and then drop it into Google Drive and convert it into Google Docs, or maybe you will get lucky with OneDrive and MS Online Word instead)
