I need a list formatted like this:
A. Top level item

B. Second top-level

How do I do that? List of formats for list has only number-letter options.

Ok, I found a hack to do this. Press enter to create new list item and then create a third one:
The third item prevents you from being unable to continue the list later on. Now press tab to indent the second item:
And finally, press back space to "delete" the indented item. It will become a paragraph:
It prevents you from continuing the list though.
You'll need to move the left indent over a bit so that the two-digit numbers don't overflow.
Do you notice in the ruler, the small rectangle and the down-pointing triangle?
Those define the "First Line Indent" and the "Left Indent". If the number is too wide, it forces the indent to jump to the next default tab stop. You need to move them further apart.
Highlight all the text you want this to happen to (otherwise it'll only work on the line where the cursor is) and drag the triangle to the right. That'll also move the rectangle, so drag the rectangle back to where you wanted it. There will be guide lines so you can line it up with existing text.
As you can see, it handles multi-line items just fine.

You have to change the list formatting from the Format menu.
The list will now add capital letters at the top level and numbers at level 2. You can do this independently at each indentation level.
