As you can see in the image below, a file that is 68MB is somehow using up 1GB of storage in my google drive. I have a few other files with this issue.
I have uploaded multiple versions of this file over the last few months, so perhaps old versions are being saved somehow? If so, can anyone advise as to how to delete all but the most current.
If it's relevant, the file type ".shp" is a shapefile for use with ArcGIS.
Any tips on the issue and how to fix it will be great.
There seem to be no way through Google Drive's interface (yet), however for a quick manual way you can use Google OAuth 2.0 Playground to call the Drive APIs List Files service and get the md5Checksum. I needed this to verify that some personal large file I uploaded got there properly, hence the answer is not exactly tailored for development purposes.
The most likely culprit is your Google Drive Trash folder. (Note: this name is localized. In the UK it's called "Bin". No matter what it's called it has the same function.)
The stuff in there will count against your quota. Empty that manually and it should help. Note that it may take a day or two for your quota to be updated.
Also, Google Drive keeps revisions of your files. (Anything older than 30 days and 100 revisions is subject to having older revisions removed.) Those revisions also count against your quota, though they won't actually appear on your local drive.

Click the file name in the Google Drive panel and the File Details sidebar will open. Go to the "Modified" section and click the Clock icon. You'll now have access to previous versions and here you can also delete any old versions.
