I've received a link to a large file (2 GB) in Google Drive. I know the file has a very high compression ratio, and my internet connection is really slow.

Is there any way to zip the file before downloading it?

You can't zip single files, but if you download multiple files at once Google will zip all of the files.

Easiest option is to select your large file, then Ctrl+Click (Cmd+Click on Mac) on a second file, and right click either file and select "Download". Google will then take an astronomical amount of time to process the two files and eventually let you download a zip of the two files.

For the moment, you have to build the URL manually.

Where YourIndividualID is the ID of the respective document (zip file). You get it either from the URL or by clicking File → Share and copying it from the sharing URL.

Yes, I just had success in doing this:

Download the ZIP file from Drive (or COPY it out of the Drive folder on your desktop) and decompress it into a folder.
Add the new file or update an existing file in the folder.
Compress the folder back into a ZIP file of the SAME name as downloaded.
Copy the newly created ZIP file BACK to the same location in your Google Drive folder and select Yes to any overwrite question messages.

This will overwrite the existing file and thus maintain the same file ID and thus sharing links is preserved!
