I want to make a custom Google Map to show someone points of interest in an area. Ideally, I’d like to drop pins on the points of interest and then add notes and images (which I’ve taken) to these pins.
Is this possible with Google Maps / Google Map Maker? I’m aware you can make a map, but these seem to be for public consumption. Ideally, I’d like it to be private—unlisted / view only with the link. Also, I couldn’t see a way to annotate / add images to these maps.
To save and print images from Google Maps, you should use Google Map Saver.
Google Map Saver (GMS) offers you an easy and free way to download big Google Maps on your PC as JPEG, PNG-8, PNG-24, BMP or Targa files. GMS is light (only ~400 KBytes) and very easy to run since doesn’t have an installer. You can save maps up to 12000 x 12000 pixels and then print them the way you like.
According to The New Google Maps, Now Available (May 17, 2013)
"My Places" is not part of the new Google Maps interface. Click the "options" icon in the black navigation bar, select "My Places" and you'll go back to the old interface. It's a trick that lets you temporarily switch to the old interface. You can also click "classic maps".
However you can still access your "My Places" by going directly to Google Maps - My Places which will contain all of your old maps (which are still editable).
You can also use Google Maps Engine Lite to create and view custom Google Maps.

With the new Google Maps Engine you can do everything you want.
There is a tutorial that takes you through the basics of setting up your own map, but it does miss mentioning that in the information field of a pin you can add
<img>tags.You will still have to host those images somewhere else.
All maps are private by default, you have to share them in the same way as you do on Google Drive.
