This has to do with right-clicking at the top of a column in Google Sheets to add another column to the left or right. When I do this, the conditional formatting from the original column carries over to the new column. However, when I try to remove the conditional formatting from the new column, the conditional formatting then also goes away on the original column. How do I decouple or unlink the columns so I can change the conditional formatting on one without affecting the other?

I think I was trying to achieve the result across spreadsheets before (rather than sheets). If you put a number in A1 of SheetB and in A1 of SheetA Conditional formatting... like so:
then if you keep adding 1 to the value in SheetB!A1 the fill colours in SheetA!A1 should toggle red/pale blue.
The formulae I chose are of the type:
=iseven(indirect("SheetB"&"!A1"))
Answering my own question:
=-$A$1 in a less than built-in condition
The = sign in front of the expression makes it an expression. Without it Google Sheets does weird stuff.

One quick way is to select the entire column you want un-formatted and choose from the main menu Format > Clear formatting. The shortcut key combination is the select the entire column you want unformatted and then hit Ctrl+\ (i.e., control and backslash).
Another fairly quick way is to select an entire unformatted column, click the paintbrush tool in the menu (upper left), and then click to select the entire column you don't want formatted. If you don't have any unformatted columns handy in the current sheet, just add a new sheet, make sure it has the same number of rows as your target sheet, and follow the above instructions: starting with selecting the entire blank new-sheet column, clicking the paintbrush tool, moving to target sheet and selecting the entire column you want to un-format.
