I want to connect with a 2nd connection (Steve) through my 1st connection friend (John).
At my friend's name, I clicked "Get introduced".
Now it gets confusing:
It shows a line with my friend's name (John) and a text box to the right.
Below that it reads: "John, can you introduce me to Steve."
Should I type something to the right of John's name?
What will Steve actually see?
I saw this happen.
If I try to access any profile page from my mobile phone, all I get is a sign-up form claiming that I should sign up to see "full profiles", though none of the profile is visible.
If I use a computer however, some details are visible.
The conclusion is that LinkedIn does shadily censor your account from some users (even if you set it as public).
It has become worse that it was, and worse than a plain webpage, by holding my account hostage, and blackmailing users to sign up in order to see it. This led me personally to lose trust in the service, and to stop using it.

It is actually possible to join up to 100 groups on LinkedIn, according to this post from someone who has joined 55 groups. She explains in a video in her post that you can join 50 parent groups and 50 subgroups. I checked a few of the groups in your screenshot, and I found that the "Disruptive I.T." group is actually a subgroup of the "Re-invent I.T." group. You are a member of both groups, and since "Disruptive I.T." is a subgroup, that is how you are a member of more than 50 groups.

If you want type some customise message you can, otherwise you can send it as pre-populated message. Its up to you how you want ask to John.
Steve will see the same message what you have sent to John if John forward it to Steve. Otherwise Steve will get John's message.
