Is it possible to manually edit the alt tag for a picture post on Tumblr

Tumblr lets you edit the HTML of your theme but not individual pages. There is no default option to edit the alt tag of a picture that you post; Tumblr automatically assigns the text associated with the picture as the alt tag.

As far as I know, editing the alt tag is not possible however I was hoping someone might have an answer here.

The short answer is no - Tumblr doesn't let you edit the alt text of your photos.

The longer answer is that it should be possible if you tell Tumblr in Settings that you want to edit your posts using plain text/HTML. Then, create a new text post, and add the photo with a normal <img> tag and with whatever alt text you like. This should work, although users reading your blog from their dashboards instead of your homepage will have to click through to see the image at all.

An issue here is that you cannot upload an image to Tumblr using this method - you have to link to an image with the img tag, so it must be hosted elsewhere.

Go to the Customize section after you log in
Click on the Theme tab
Click Use custom HTML

This will bring up a edit box that contains the HTML and tumblr code used by the theme.

Put the code for the tags somewhere between the opening {block:Posts} and closing {/block:Posts} tags.

To start off easy, let's put the tags at the bottom of all your post types.

Where you see the following line:

{/block:Posts}

Insert the following starting chunk to look like this:

    {block:HasTags}
       {block:Tags}
          <a href="{TagURL}">{Tag}</a>
       {/block:Tags}
    {/block:HasTags}

{/block:Posts}

Click Update preview in the lower right corner of the edit box (or it will update itself)
Click Save + Close in the upper right of the dashboard.

Refresh your tumblr blog and you should now see the tags display.

Quick way to edit a specific Tumblr post

Mehper's answer no longer works, as Kirk Woll mentions. As of Feb 2015, you need the following URL to edit:

https://www.tumblr.com/edit/<post_id>?redirect_to=%2Fblog%2F<blog_name>

Replacing < post_id> with your post ID # (example: 406783219) and replacing < blog_name> with the domain of your blog, without the tumblr.com part (example: staff).

https://www.tumblr.com/edit/406783219?redirect_to=%2Fblog%2Fstaff

Obviously, you have to be logged in to your account first, and have the appropriate edit permissions.
