Is there currently a way to search the cards that have been archived in Trello?
The header menu search seems to be limited to live items at the moment.

There is not currently a way to filter cards that way, no.
Trello now offers an invite collaborators by URL feature (currently in beta).
Steps
- Show Menu
- Add Members >
Invite people by giving them a special link… - Place the URL in a conspicuous place like your website or a Readme card of some sort along with some instructions for your collaborators.

I think this is live (since 2012/06/28) just search after "is:archived" and whatever term you look for.
