Trello has a new feature where, to the right of all the lists, there's an "Add a list…" button-thing for quick adding of a list.
The trouble is, this creates a horizontal scroll bar on the board, which looks ugly and seems unnecessary.
Is there a way to disable or hide the "Add a list…" button?
I agree with your friend about not dividing up into separate boards by type of job.
With your examples such as 'Design ideas' etc, I think they really do fit naturally within different lists on the same Board. It's exactly the sort of usage that Joel demoed in multiple videos about Trello.
The only thing I can think of, to help manage very long lists, is to use Trello's Labels system to put categories on cards, and then use filtering. You should definitely give meaningful names to the default labels.

Having said that, fairly early on the Trello on Trello board got huge, and eventually they reduced the scope of it. So it's does seem to be a well-known problem.
Trello doesn't have "Favorites" exactly, but you can control which boards show up in your boards menu by "pinning" (or "unpinning") a board
If there is a board that you aren't a member of, but you'd like to keep an eye on (e.g. the Trello Development Board), you can add it to your Boards Menu
(The Boards Menu is the list of boards you see when you click the "Boards" link in the upper right)
You can also use that menu to unpin boards that you don't want in your header. (e.g. if you're a member of a board, but you don't check it very frequently)
A list of all of your boards, including the ones that are not pinned, is available on your boards page

One solution that worked so far for me in Google Chrome was to use the AdBlock extension on the list
DIV:DIV.This removes the item permanently. Since you can still double-click on a blank area to add a list, I miss no option and have additional space.
