How can I change my @ name on Twitter? I don't care about losing followers as I don't have any.
I can see how to change my "name", but my @ name isn't changing when I do that.

Yes, each Twitter Account is assigned a user_id.

user_id
The ID of the user for whom to return results for. Helpful for disambiguating when a valid user ID is also a valid screen name.
It's also useful to know that you can get the user_id by displaying a users tweet via the /statuses/show/{tweetId} API Call
This will display results similar to this:
As you can see the user_id is provided along with the individual tweet information.
The {tweetId} can be found by clicking on the time stamp of any tweet. The {tweetId} will be long number at the end of the URL.
TwitterCounter.com lets you see up to 6 months history of followers, following, and tweets. To see 6 months worth you have to tweet a message, but 3 months or less is available to see right away. Just sign in with twitter and search for a user and up it comes. Eg @spolsky:

Change your @ username via the Account Settings page. (Changing your person name is done via the Profile Settings page).
The Username field is where your @ name is set. Changing it here will update your account to a new location. As you type, it will show you if the new username has already been taken or if it's availabe to use.
For example, if you updated your username to
monkeyillusionsthen your new Twitter page URL would be:https://twitter.com/monkeyillusions.Note: Any previous replies or mentions of your old username will not be updated.
