I have been playing around with theme customization with a blogger site. Most of my endeavors have been successful, but everytime the page loads, the large, orange "loading" graphic shows.
It doesn't appear to be themeable, and looks quite out of place given non-orange themes. Has anyone any insight on how to theme or hide this loader? I assume it is javascript based?

I did a bit more digging and found that the orange loader image is injected with JavaScript in a JS file classic.js.
In that file the code loads HTML templates and compiles them with a templating engine:
In one of the templates is the animated orange image as a CSS base 64 image.
The JavaScript code that's injected includes this:
So it's just a CSS class, and you can override it like this:
