Electronic – Electrical isolation in PLC output cards

isolationoutputplc

Every output card spec sheet I read says something about electrical isolation. One I read recently said "Isolated 1500VDC channel to channel". What does isolation mean and what advantages do isolated output channels have over non-isolated channels?

Functionally though, having isolated I/O means that if something goes horribly wrong in the field with your I/O wiring and wires get crossed up, you might damage that particular I/O point, but it will not go further into the PLC and fry the whole thing. it's easy to replace one I/O card, it's not easy to replace an entire PLC.
