I have this simple wiring diagram for an old tractor, and there are some symbols that look almost like diodes, but not quite. I have highlighted most of them in red in the attached image. Do these symbols represent diodes, or something else?
The text in the wiring diagram is in Norwegian, but do the following substitutions, and you'll understand most of it:
Searching the web for information on motorcycle electrical schematic symbols shows that the symbol in question is a connector. The left side (the box) indicates the female side while the right side (the arrow shape) is the male side.
There is absolutely nothing strange there - it's just how they've drawn it that's strange. Let me re-draw it as a proper schematic for you:

When the switch turns on the relay activates and power flows to the motor (depicted as a lamp here - circuitlab doesn't have a motor).
Why did they wire the battery to pin 87 and not pin 30? Simply because then the motor would be on all the time and the relay would do nothing.
Why did they use the same gauge wire? Simple economy of scale. They're already using that gauge elsewhere, so why fork out on a different, smaller, gauge as well when they don't need to?

I expect that those symbols represent connectors, since they seem to (mostly) be between a light or other device and the wiring harness.
