Hello, i'm at a complete loss, have never came across that type of a ribbon cable, could anyone point me in the right direction as to the nature of the "bridge" between traces there. Cheers

I think this is the type of membrane keyboard where the metal is extremely thin. It's often not copper foil as you might expect, rather I think it's printed silver paste. Basically, it has no structural integrity of its own, relying on the plastic for that. If you rub away the surface of the metal, you quickly discover that the surface is all there is to it.
If your ribbon cable consists of two layers of plastic, with the tacks printed onto the inside surface of one, then you may have some success. Try to peel the two layers apart, and cut the non-track layer a few mm shorter.
Alternatively, you might try repairing the broken tracks with some wire glue.

Check out Element14. Navigate from all products to "Cable, Wire & Assemblies" then "Cable Assemblies" and then finally "FFC / FPC (Flat Flex)" (http://au.element14.com/ffc-fpc-flat-flex). You can then select 10 connectors and the pitch spacing to 0.5mm and you should find what you need assuming the length is between 50mm to 229mm.

One example why we use something similar:
We have a display which we use to connect to our board. The display comes with a flex foil. We also have a second source for this display from a second vendor. To identify the display vendor type we ask second vendor to short two traces. The flex foil as such is supplied by third party to both LCD vendors without bridging.
The board can easily identify the type of the display connected and load appropriate settings for the display.
