Ubuntu – Install php extensions on ubuntu

I have a Ubuntu 9.10 server. I have installed apache2 and php5 using the apt-get commands.

How does one install php extensions? Are there commands like apt-get to get them? Or should I manually look for the files on the php website and set them up in the php.ini?

More specifically, I need mcrypt, curl and gd.

All you need to do is:

sudo apt-get install php5-mcrypt php5-curl php5-gd

If you need to check what is installed php-wise you can:

dpkg --list | grep php

EDIT: Removed sudo in the command above as it's not needed with dpkg --list.

PHP-FPM is the fastcgi process manager (or something like that); it is a common way of keeping PHP processes alive while nginx restarts.

From the command line, ps aux will show you what's running; if this is a private / testing server, sudo kill <process id> on anything that has PHP in the name until all the old processes are dead (or as commented above, reboot the whole box); if it's a public / live server you may not want to be so reckless...

Also, /etc/php5/cli/conf.d/mcrypt.ini -- what about /etc/php/cgi/... if that exists?

Usually where you extracted the source you can find the source for all the modules as well. In this case, I think under the "ext" directory. So from the source folder:

[php-5.3.10]$ cd ext/mcrypt/
[mcrypt]$ phpize
[mcrypt]$ ./configure --your-options-here
[mcrypt]$ make && make install

Then edit your php.ini and add:

extension=mcrypt.so

Finally, restart Apache. And I think that should do it for you.
