C# – Get Hard disk serial Number

I want to get hard disk serial number. How I can I do that?
I tried with two code but I am not getting

In this one I am not getting any Unique Serial number.
And Second one is

Label3.Text = "VolumeSerialNumber="+ disk["VolumeSerialNumber"].ToString();

Here I am getting VolumeSerialNumber. But it is not unique one. If I format the hard disk, this will change. How Can I get this?

Hm, looking at your first set of code, I think you have retrieved (maybe?) the hard drive model. The serial # comes from Win32_PhysicalMedia.

Get Hard Drive model

    ManagementObjectSearcher searcher = new
    ManagementObjectSearcher("SELECT * FROM Win32_DiskDrive");

   foreach(ManagementObject wmi_HD in searcher.Get())
   {
    HardDrive hd = new HardDrive();
    hd.Model = wmi_HD["Model"].ToString();
    hd.Type  = wmi_HD["InterfaceType"].ToString(); 
    hdCollection.Add(hd);
   }

Get the Serial Number

 searcher = new
    ManagementObjectSearcher("SELECT * FROM Win32_PhysicalMedia");

   int i = 0;
   foreach(ManagementObject wmi_HD in searcher.Get())
   {
    // get the hard drive from collection
    // using index
    HardDrive hd = (HardDrive)hdCollection[i];

    // get the hardware serial no.
    if (wmi_HD["SerialNumber"] == null)

Contrary to the answers here, you DON'T need to worry about encoding if the bytes don't need to be interpreted!

Like you mentioned, your goal is, simply, to "get what bytes the string has been stored in".
(And, of course, to be able to re-construct the string from the bytes.)

For those goals, I honestly do not understand why people keep telling you that you need the encodings. You certainly do NOT need to worry about encodings for this.

Just do this instead:

static byte[] GetBytes(string str)
{
    byte[] bytes = new byte[str.Length * sizeof(char)];
    System.Buffer.BlockCopy(str.ToCharArray(), 0, bytes, 0, bytes.Length);
    return bytes;
}

// Do NOT use on arbitrary bytes; only use on GetBytes's output on the SAME system
static string GetString(byte[] bytes)
{
    char[] chars = new char[bytes.Length / sizeof(char)];
    System.Buffer.BlockCopy(bytes, 0, chars, 0, bytes.Length);
    return new string(chars);
}

As long as your program (or other programs) don't try to interpret the bytes somehow, which you obviously didn't mention you intend to do, then there is nothing wrong with this approach! Worrying about encodings just makes your life more complicated for no real reason.

Additional benefit to this approach: It doesn't matter if the string contains invalid characters, because you can still get the data and reconstruct the original string anyway!

It will be encoded and decoded just the same, because you are just looking at the bytes.

If you used a specific encoding, though, it would've given you trouble with encoding/decoding invalid characters.

Php – Getting Serial Number of the Hard Drive Provided by the manufacturer through PHP

The following returns the disk serial number. Should work with multiple drives, you'll just get multiple results. Just run it with shell_exec.

wmic DISKDRIVE GET SerialNumber

wmic.exe is located in your windows system32 folder. And wmic does exist on WinXP, Ive used it there myself.

My result on Vista:

C:\Windows\System32>wmic DISKDRIVE GET SerialNumber
SerialNumber
20202020202054534241354c4*snip*

I do not know if all harddrives provides the serial number to the OS.

It seems the wmic command is only available on the professional versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.
