C++ – initialize a const array in a class initializer in C++

I have the following class in C++:

class a {
    const int b[2];
    // other stuff follows

    // and here's the constructor
    a(void);
}

The question is, how do I initialize b in the initialization list, given that I can't initialize it inside the body of the function of the constructor, because b is const?

This doesn't work:

a::a(void) : 
    b([2,3])
{
     // other initialization stuff
}

Edit: The case in point is when I can have different values for b for different instances, but the values are known to be constant for the lifetime of the instance.

With C++11 the answer to this question has now changed and you can in fact do:

struct a {
    const int b[2];
    // other bits follow

    // and here's the constructor
    a();
};

a::a() :
    b{2,3}
{
     // other constructor work
}

int main() {
 a a;
}

The class declaration should be in the header file (Or in the source file if not shared).
File: foo.h

class foo
{
    private:
        static int i;
};

But the initialization should be in source file.
File: foo.cpp

int foo::i = 0;

If the initialization is in the header file then each file that includes the header file will have a definition of the static member. Thus during the link phase you will get linker errors as the code to initialize the variable will be defined in multiple source files. The initialisation of the static int i must be done outside of any function.

Note: Matt Curtis: points out that C++ allows the simplification of the above if the static member variable is of const int type (e.g. int, bool, char). You can then declare and initialize the member variable directly inside the class declaration in the header file:

class foo
{
    private:
        static int const i = 42;
};

How to initialize all members of an array to the same value

Unless that value is 0 (in which case you can omit some part of the initializer and the corresponding elements will be initialized to 0), there's no easy way.

Don't overlook the obvious solution, though:

int myArray[10] = { 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5 };

Elements with missing values will be initialized to 0:

int myArray[10] = { 1, 2 }; // initialize to 1,2,0,0,0...

So this will initialize all elements to 0:

int myArray[10] = { 0 }; // all elements 0

In C++, an empty initialization list will also initialize every element to 0. This is not allowed with C:

int myArray[10] = {}; // all elements 0 in C++

Remember that objects with static storage duration will initialize to 0 if no initializer is specified:

static int myArray[10]; // all elements 0

And that "0" doesn't necessarily mean "all-bits-zero", so using the above is better and more portable than memset(). (Floating point values will be initialized to +0, pointers to null value, etc.)
