Gmail – Have Gmail display messages inside the list

Not sure how to word this, but I'd quite like Gmail to work like Google Reader – where you can just k,k,k up through the messages, without switching out to 'another page' for each message.

I guess it's not possible – haven't seen anything in Labs that looks like I want – but has this already been asked for? Just interested to know if there's some place I can go and vote!

No, there is nothing in Labs, though people have requested it. There are a couple alternative options with keyboard shortcuts.

You can use j to move down and k to move up the message list in your inbox. (You mentioned you knew k already). However, these also work when viewing a message. If you are viewing a message, hit k to read your next newest email.

If you prefer working from the inbox list each time, o will open the current email, and u returns you to the listing.

Not automatically you can't.

You can set up a very generic filter that should capture most of the legit mailing lists that you're subscribed to.

Create a filter with the following:

Has the words: unsubscribe
Apply the label: lists

This will deal with most of the mailing lists since they should all include instructions, if not a link itself, to unsubscribe.

This should also cover those instances where the mailer addresses the To: field of the email directly to you and which might be a little tricky when filtering for to:me.

Gmail – Why doesn’t the Gmail “mute” button show up for me

You can make the mute button come back when filtering by including the is:unread filter and adding -is:muted. I have the following query displayed beneath my inbox using the Multiple Inboxes lab, and it allows me to mute conversations:

label:Support is:unread -is:muted

This shows me anything labelled Support that I haven't read, and that isn't muted yet. The mute button can be found under the More Actions button as usual.
